Utju Lisa is an exhibition of self-portraits by artists from Areyonga (Utju). They were painted during a visual arts workshop at Charles Darwin University earlier this year.

The work followed discussion about what a portrait can tell us, and what an artist might present to viewers, through choosing to make an image of themselves. The artists also looked at other portraits, in particular the Mona Lisa, and decided to take on her pose.
They chose to dress themselves in a similar way to the costumes worn by the Central Australian Aboriginal Women’s Choir, of whom most are part, and which is a powerful positive force in their lives. In this way some of the artists’ current life has been presented while acknowledging a centuries old painting of a woman, which has endured through the ages.

So, Utju Lisa.
